Active Directory Bulk Objects Creation

bulk objects creation

ASN Active Directory Manager provides the simple user interface to create users, groups, computers, contacts and OU in bulk. More attributes can easily be set while creating the objects. There are three modes available in Active Directory bulk objects creation and all the three modes can be used together.

  • Importing records from csv file
  • Adding indexed bulk records.
  • Adding individual records using the customizable user interface
Required columns for AD Objects creation

ASN Active Directory Manager bulk creation process operates with ldap attributes only. The CSV headers must be ldap names. Check the below table for minimum required attributes for the objects creation.

Object Class LDAP Attribute
User samaccountname (need to be unique in Domain level)
Group samaccountname(need to be unique in Domain level)
Computer samaccountname(need to be unique in Domain level)
Contact name(need to be unique in parent container level)
OrganizationalUnit name(need to be unique in parent container level)
Importing csv file

Prepare a csv file to create bulk users(see the image for sample csv file). If all the users in Domain A need to be created in Domain B, generate the All users report in Domain A with required columns and save the report as a csv file then import the csv to create users in Domain B.

Indexed bulk records

In some cases, bulk users need to created with indexed (ex: testuser1, testuser2,....). ASN Active Directory Manager provides the simple user interface to create unlimited bulk records with pre or post indexed with proper interval step.

Add individual records using customizable user interface

Individual records can be added using customizable simple user interface. Most of advanced attributes like memberof, manager, thumbnailphoto, etc can easily be set. The user interface can easily be customized. The tabs and attributes can easily be updated.

Basic options

The users created without password set will be disabled state and can not access the Domain resources. ASN Active Directory Manager provides the option to set the temporary password for the bulk users. And the change password at next logon option can be set for the users to change their own password when they login to the Domain. The computers need can be with the option The accounts(user/group) that can join the bulk computers to a Domain

Advanced options

Most of advanced attributes like memberof, manager, thumbnailphoto, etc can easily be set using the simple user interface. The user interface can easily be customized. If a particular field already exists in the table of content, the recent value can be overwritten by option.

Add/Remove Columns

Added columns can be removed and updated. The new columns can added with a indexed value or macro defined value. If a common attribute value need to set for all the users, this option can be used.

Advanced Configurations

ASN Active Directory Manager provides the advanced configurations to control the bulk objects creation process. Macros plays an important role in bulk objects creation process. Most of the user attributes are formed by combining some required attributes with defined logic. For example, the displayname attribute formed by joining first name (givename) and last name (sn) with a space and e-mail attribute is formed by user logon name(samaccountname) and domain name. In some cases, the macro resolving results in to an empty string. In such cases, the default value can be configured.

The bulk objects are created with more attributes set. In some cases, some attributes may throw errors due not formatted well and some other reasons. ASN Active Directory Manager allows you to make 3 decisions at this instant.

  • Continue to set other attributes when a particular attribute throw error.
  • Exit the current object creation when a particular attribute throw error.
  • Delete the created object when a particular attribute throw error.

Once all the attributes prepared well and ready to start the creation process, you may need to edit a paricular attribute for a particular value after verification. ASN Active Directory Manager provides the option to control the edit option in table of content. Editing some attributes like manager, memberof may cause a error in attribute set. You can configure the set of attributes, which are not allowed to edit in the table of content. And if you prepared the table of content well and wish to continue to create the objects later, save the table of content in a csv file and import the same csv file later and create the objects.

Once the creation process started, you have the option stop the process and then continue the process from where exactly it stopped. Once all the records processed successfully, the result can be saved as a csv file for reference.
